Delta Phi Mu Sorority INC.
In response to the lack of respect & support devoted to Hispanic Women at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and coupled with the concern for the vastly growing Hispanic population & devastating number of both high school and college dropouts; a group of ladies joined to create an organization that would provide the women of Purdue University the motivation necessary to enhance their academic careers and develop the essential skills necessary for any woman to succeed in the professional world of today. They believed that by providing unity amongst the Hispanic community, they would serve as role models for other Hispanic women. These courageous and determined young women dreamt of Sisterhood; a bond of true sisterhood that would support, guide, assist, and love one another as true friends and sisters: a real family.
On August 28, 1991 their dream was realized and Delta Phi Mu Sorority was born. Our founding mothers Rosita Serrano Galarza, Annette Zöe Rosa, Rosa Ana Fernandez, Guadalupe Rosalinda Acevez, and Sylvia Medellin began the legacy of Scholarship, Service, and Sisterhood at Purdue University at the West Lafayette campus in Indiana. This marked the beginning of uniting Hispanic women who had initially been strangers in any sisterhood.
As the years went on. Delta Phi Mu continued to grow and as their family continued to expand, the Distinguished Ladies of Delta Phi Mu realized their moral obligation to ALL women and communities. By incorporating into their founding principles the promotion of intercultural exchange, the ladies of Delta Phi Mu Sorority hoped to serve as an outlet for all women. Since, the membership of Delta Phi Mu Sorority has been multicultural; including women of Hispanic, Anglo, African American, Asian and Native American descent. Representing many ethnicities and cultures, the women of Delta Phi Mu adopted and believed in our second motto: "Different Worlds, One Sisterhood".
In the spirit of growth and multicultural expansion, the hand of sisterhood was soon expanded to the Ladies in Southern Illinois University-Carbondale on December 5, 1999 when the school of M.I.R.A.C.L.E.S was initiated into active membership. This Royal later became the second official Delta Phi Mu chapter in history, the Beautiful Beta Chapter. Soon after, that same hand was extended to DePaul University on May 12, 2000, when the school of A.U.R.O.R.A. was also initiated in active membership. Finally, on February 16, 2001 Delta Phi Mu Sorority became Delta Phi Mu Sorority Incorporated. Keeping within the Chicago-land area, Delta Phi Mu Sorority, Inc. expanded its ever-growing organization on November 2, 2002 by extending a hand in active membership to the three ladies from the school of E.N.D.U.R.A.N.C.E. at Chicago State University.
The most recent Royal to graduate into the Delta Phi Mu familia, is the University of Kentucky Royal on February 23, 2008. In the summer of 2008, Delta Phi Mu Sorority, Inc. became an offical trademarked organization and soon after, in 2009, Delta Phi Mu received its 501(c)7 non-for-profit status.
Delta Phi Mu is a public service organization governed by the principles of Scholarship, Service, and Sisterhood. We were founded upon many goals and aspirations that are summarized in our motto: “La Esperanza del Futuro está en las Manos de La Mujer!” which means "The Hope of the Future is in the Hands of the Woman".
Our sisterhood continues to be built upon a foundation of academic excellence, support, guidance, and assistance to others. Delta Phi Mu Sorority, Incorporated was founded to unite college women interested in Hispanic culture, to encourage and motivate academic achievements, and to promote sisterhood, guidance, love and friendship among the members of the sorority. Delta Phi Mu Sorority, Inc. is continuing to expand to all points of the globe with the hopes of making a difference in the lives of ALL races, colors and creeds.
